FIPPA for Government Departments and other Public Bodies
Public bodies have certain obligations and duties under FIPPA. Broadly speaking, these duties relate to responding to access requests, protecting personal information, dealing with the Ombudsman's Office during investigations and audits, and statistical reporting (sent to [email protected]). This portal is designed to help officials in the public bodies understand and carry out their functions.
Public bodies under FIPPA vary from large Manitoba departments, Crown corporations and regional health authorities to small rural municipalities and northern community councils. Some receive applications for access to information every week, while others have only a few per year. Each situation presents challenges for the public body.
Like access and privacy legislation in other jurisdictions, FIPPA is complex and sometimes may be difficult to apply in real life situations. While our office will be happy to assist in defining the issues and considering options, public bodies should consult their legal counsel for legal interpretation and advice.
